The Code Research is listed so you can see the minimum requirements. We looked at about 10 different iterations before settling on this configuration which accomplished what we thought was important. The resultant ‘H’ configuration breaks the Athletic Facility into two major components. The top leg is the restrooms, sauna, steam, shower area. The bottom leg is the open area for exercise equipment with the attaching component serving the same purpose and circulation. A courtyard is created and a water feature planned. A main consideration was the ability to enter the restroom facilities from outside without entering the facilty, which is accomplished by the Entrance Vestibule.
Another consideration which informed the design was the function of the sauna and steam rooms. In this configuration both rooms can be entered from either the Mens or Womens Restroom. In addition one or the other door could be locked allowing alternating times or days for use by either sex. We did not assume this was unisex, but could function that way. Both the sauna and steam rooms are designed as seven seat which would serve this facility. Let us know if you were considering a different size. They are both 7’x7’. A shower is adjacent to the sauna / steam vestibule.
We would suggest prefabricated assemblies. The remainder of the Restroom incorporates a two sink vanity. Lockers were part of the program and we designed for 18 half size lockers for each Restroom. A locker area and bench are provided. A radius pool shower is adjacent to the restroom and pool. A janitor sink will need to be incorporated into the facility. An ADA bathroom is required and provided for both Restrooms. A urinal was added to the Mens and a second toilet to the Womens. These are not required by code but are appropriate for the size of your facility.
All of the Restroom facilities were designed as efficiently as possible to maximize the area for the Athletic Facilty. The Athletic Facilty portion on the large leg has an interior width of 16’ which would allow for two rows of equipment and a central circulation path. The connecting leg of the facilty is approximately 10’ wide which provides space for one row of equipment and a circulation path. Let us know if there are any special electrical or plumbing requirements for your exercise equipment. Let us know if you have any storage (ie, exercise equipment) requirements for a separate room in the Athletic Facility.
